Most case packers pack vertically, dropping or placing the product into the case from above. Some types of product do not lend themselves to vertical packing.
Two in particular are:
Square or rectangular cartons or products that fit snugly in the case. Whether singly or as a pattern, they act as a piston to the case’s cylinder as they are packed. There may not be enough open space to allow air to escape the case. This slows their entry into the case and the packing cycle time.
If not pushed evenly, one or more of the cartons, especially if lightweight, can pop up. This can allow the pack pattern to be disorganized and the result is a jumble in the case. Horizontal case packing allows the opposite side of the case, which would normally be closed during vertical packing, to remain open. This eliminates the air cushion effect.
Other products may be unstable if packed vertically. Long tubes of silicone caulk are easy to handle on their sides. They can be stacked and shoved into the case.
Some cases have the openings on the ends rather than top and bottom. It would be hard to drop 24 cans, on their side, into a case. Easy to push them in sideways from the end.
Horizontal case packers can be semi or fully automated. In a semi-automated packer, the operator opens the case and places it over a funnel. The product is pushed in, the operator closes the bottom flaps and the case is flipped upright by an arm then conveyed or passed to a case sealer to seal top and bottom.
The picture above is a fully automated case erector and packer. A case blank is pulled from the magazine, opened and pushed onto the loading funnel. Product is pushed in, and the case, still horizontal, is carried to an integrated closing and sealing section. As it exits the machine, it is flipped upright.
Horizontal case packers are gentler than other types of case packer which makes them particularly useful with fragile products.
